Best Maps for Melbourne

by Christopher O'Keeffe August 17, 2026

Best Maps for Melbourne

Melbourne is not one place at one scale. It is a gridded central city, a vast suburban system wrapped around Port Phillip, a tram and rail network, a gateway to regional Victoria, a landscape of plains, river valleys and forested ranges, and a city whose histories extend far beyond the modern street plan. This guide compares the best street, touring, wall, business, topographic and historical maps for understanding it.

By Christopher O’Keeffe — Managing Director, Mapworld Australia

Melbourne is easy to recognise and surprisingly difficult to hold in your head.

The central grid is compact and legible. Greater Melbourne is not. The metropolitan region spreads north through established suburbs and growth corridors towards Sunbury, Craigieburn, Whittlesea and beyond; west through Footscray, Werribee and Melton towards Bacchus Marsh and Geelong; east along valleys and transport corridors towards the Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley and Gippsland; and south-east around the bay through Dandenong, Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula.

Port Phillip gives Melbourne a strong visual centre, but it also creates a metropolitan arc rather than a simple circle. The Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers, basalt plains, creek valleys, rail corridors, freeways, industrial districts, green wedges and the forested eastern ranges all influence how the city works. Two suburbs that appear close on a small screen may sit on opposite sides of a river, rail yard, freeway, park or bay-side corridor.

A navigation app can calculate one route. A good paper map reveals the system behind it.

That is why there is no single best map of Melbourne for every purpose. For most people, the right Melbourne map kit combines:

  1. a current folded street or metropolitan map for portable overview;

  2. a Victoria touring map if the city is the beginning of a longer journey;

  3. a wall map for seeing Greater Melbourne at one glance;

  4. a business, postcode or local-government map where territories and boundaries matter;

  5. a topographic map for terrain, fieldwork or regional physical context;

  6. a historical map for research, education, memory or display; and

  7. current official information for traffic, public transport, park access, emergencies and other conditions that can change after a printed map is published.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples as the Traditional Owners of the land it governs. Greater Melbourne extends across the Countries of multiple Traditional Owner groups, so place-specific guidance matters. The City of Melbourne’s Aboriginal Melbourne and Mapping Aboriginal Melbourne resources are useful starting points. Modern administrative and historical colonial maps record only particular ways of naming and dividing land; they do not contain the full history, knowledge or meaning of Country.

The Short Answer

For a first visit, a move or general metropolitan orientation, begin with the Melbourne & Region Hema map. Its strength is breadth: it treats Melbourne as a region rather than only as a CBD.

Choose the Melbourne City Streets & Suburbs UBD 362 when detailed inner-city streets and a broader suburban view are both important. Its 1:25,000 central side and 1:120,000 metropolitan side solve two different navigation problems on one folded sheet.

Choose the Victoria State & Suburban UBD 370 when Melbourne is one part of a statewide trip or service area. For a touring-first map, the Victoria Hema Handy Map adds useful travel symbols. The older Victoria Hema State Map remains a useful large-format overview, but its December 2014 publication date means every route, road status and facility must be checked against current information.

For a wall, choose the Melbourne UBD 362 when central street detail matters, the Hema Melbourne & Region map when the full metropolitan footprint matters, and the Melbourne Business 365 when postcodes, council areas, industrial districts and commercial territories are the real subject.

For topographic context, the Melbourne J5505 AUSTopo 1:250,000 is the best current broad sheet. The 7822 Melbourne 1:100,000 map offers more detail, but it must be treated as a legacy reference rather than assumed current field mapping. For bushwalking or detailed field navigation, select a current Vicmap or specialist recreational sheet at a larger scale—typically 1:25,000 or 1:50,000—from the broader Victoria maps collection, and confirm its exact coverage and edition.

For historical Melbourne, the best choice depends on the question. The 1901 Sands & McDougall map explains the Federation-era city; the 1895 tramways map reveals the transport network; O.J. Dale’s 1934 pictorial map celebrates Melbourne’s first colonial century; and H.E.C. Robinson’s 1908 Victoria map supplies the wider state context.

A street map shows how Melbourne is connected. A topographic map shows the ground beneath those connections. A historical map shows how both changed.

One City, Six Different Mapping Problems

“A map of Melbourne” can mean six very different things.

A Street Map Answers: How Do I Get Around?

Street maps prioritise:

  • streets, lanes and road hierarchy;

  • suburb names and boundaries;

  • postcodes and locality indexes;

  • tram and railway corridors;

  • parks, waterways and major facilities;

  • the continuity of routes across adjoining suburbs;

  • metropolitan context beyond the current phone screen.

They are best for visitors, residents, relocations, trades, deliveries, property conversations and anyone trying to understand Melbourne as a connected urban system.

A Touring Map Answers: What Lies Beyond the Metropolitan Edge?

Melbourne is the departure point for the Great Ocean Road, Goldfields, Grampians, High Country, Gippsland, Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and routes towards Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney. Touring maps sacrifice street-level detail so that highways, regional roads, towns, parks, fuel and travel distances can be seen together.

They are better for choosing a corridor or detour than for finding a laneway in Fitzroy.

A Wall Map Answers: How Does Greater Melbourne Fit Together?

A wall map exchanges portability for overview. It allows a family, classroom, operations team or boardroom to see the city simultaneously rather than through a moving viewport.

It is useful for:

  • sales and service territories;

  • logistics and fleet planning;

  • property and development discussions;

  • visitor itineraries and staff orientation;

  • education and spatial thinking;

  • customer, asset or project locations;

  • comparing the north, west, east, south-east and bayside corridors;

  • seeing how the urban area relates to green wedges and regional gateways.

A Business, Postcode or LGA Map Answers: How Is Work Organised?

Suburbs, postcodes, local government areas, electoral divisions, delivery zones and service territories are not interchangeable. A business map is designed for commercial geography. A postcode map is designed for postcode lookup and allocation. An LGA map is designed for council geography.

Each can support planning, but none should be treated as the legally authoritative source of a boundary without checking the responsible current authority.

A Topographic Map Answers: What Is the Land Doing?

Melbourne’s apparent flatness is only part of the story. The metropolitan and regional landscape includes:

  • the coastal arc and lowlands around Port Phillip;

  • the Yarra, Maribyrnong and Werribee river systems;

  • volcanic plains to the west and north-west;

  • creek valleys and ridges through the eastern suburbs;

  • the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges;

  • coastal cliffs, dunes and headlands around the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas;

  • forests, reservoirs, parks and agricultural land around the metropolitan fringe.

Topographic maps use contours, spot heights, watercourses, vegetation, tracks, roads and grids to reveal that physical structure. They are useful for outdoor recreation, environmental work, utilities, emergency planning, field education and regional geographic understanding.

A Historical Map Answers: What Was Here Before?

Historical maps reveal earlier tramways, rail yards, wharves, streets, municipalities, estates, parks, place names and development edges. They support local and family history, architecture, heritage work, education and display.

They are not current navigation maps. They also reflect the purposes, language and omissions of the institutions that produced them.

1. Melbourne & Region Map — Hema Maps, 13th Edition

Best Overall Portable Map for Visitors and Metropolitan Context

The Melbourne & Region Hema map is the most straightforward first purchase for a visitor or resident who wants to see Greater Melbourne as a whole.

Melbourne & Region Map – Maps – Victoria – Hema | Mapworld

At 1:115,000, it provides enough space for the primary metropolitan road system, suburb and postcode information, industrial areas, parkland, transport corridors and major facilities. The product also includes a more detailed CBD inset and diagrams for Melbourne’s tram and train networks.

The wall-map version describes coverage extending broadly:

  • north to Yan Yean and Whittlesea;

  • south through the Mornington Peninsula to Phillip Island;

  • east to Healesville and the Dandenong Ranges; and

  • west to Werribee and Bacchus Marsh.

The reverse adds regional coverage towards places including Ballarat, Kyneton, Heathcote, Yea, Mansfield and Warburton. That broad footprint is the map’s main advantage. Melbourne journeys frequently cross from an inner suburb to an outer growth area, industrial district, airport corridor, peninsula or regional edge. The Hema map keeps those places in one frame.

Best For

Choose it for:

  • first-time visitors;

  • new residents and relocating families;

  • day trips around the metropolitan fringe;

  • hotel, visitor-centre and tour-operator reference;

  • keeping in a vehicle as an overview and backup;

  • understanding the relationship between Melbourne and nearby regional gateways.

What It Does Not Replace

At 1:115,000, it cannot show every central street and lane as clearly as UBD 362’s 1:25,000 side. It is also not a bushwalking or detailed off-road map. Use it as the metropolitan framework and add a more detailed map when the task narrows.

The product page identifies this as the 13th edition, published 1 February 2018. That date is important in a changing city. The map remains useful for geographic structure and broad planning, but current transport, roads, facilities and access must be checked through official live sources.

2. Melbourne City Streets & Suburbs UBD 362, 8th Edition

Best Detailed Portable Map of Central and Greater Melbourne

The Melbourne City Streets & Suburbs UBD 362 is the better portable choice when inner-city detail matters.

Melbourne City Streets and Suburbs Map 362 – Victoria – UBD | Mapworld

The 2023, eighth-edition product is double-sided:

  • Central Melbourne at 1:25,000, extending broadly from Essendon in the north-west to Bellfield in the north-east, Williamstown in the south-west and Sandringham in the south-east; and

  • Greater Melbourne at 1:120,000, extending north to Sunbury and south towards Cowes and the Mornington Peninsula, with an inset covering Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

The central side is useful for streets, lanes, tram and train lines, parks, commercial areas, landmarks and locality boundaries. The metropolitan side supplies arterials, ring roads, built-up areas, reserves, industrial zones, suburbs and postcodes, supported by an index.

Why the Two Scales Matter

A map detailed enough for Carlton, Southbank, Richmond or St Kilda cannot show the full metropolitan region at the same size. UBD 362 solves that by combining a detailed central view with a wider city view.

This makes it useful for:

  • residents and new arrivals;

  • trades and mobile service teams;

  • property and relocation discussions;

  • delivery planning;

  • urban geography and education;

  • visitors who will move beyond the CBD;

  • anyone wanting more street detail than a regional map provides.

Important Edition Note

The cartography is identified as a 2023 edition. Melbourne’s transport and road environment continues to change, so check Transport Victoria’s Journey Planner, current public-transport disruptions and VicTraffic where present-day service patterns or road conditions matter.

3. Victoria State & Suburban Map UBD 370

Best Folded Map for Melbourne Within Victoria

The Victoria State & Suburban Map UBD 370 is the strongest single sheet for someone who needs both Melbourne and Victoria.

Victoria State & Suburban Map 370 – Victoria – UBD | Mapworld

The 2024 edition pairs:

  • a statewide map at 1:975,000; and

  • Greater Melbourne at 1:120,000.

The metropolitan side extends broadly north to Sunbury, south to Cowes and Phillip Island, west to Bacchus Marsh and east to the Dandenong Ranges, with a Geelong and Bellarine inset. It marks suburbs and postcodes, arterial roads, industrial areas, waterways, parks and transport infrastructure.

The state side shows the highway and regional-road framework, towns, parks and reserves. It gives a visitor or business user one coherent answer to two questions: “How does Melbourne work?” and “How does Melbourne connect to the rest of Victoria?”

Best For

Choose UBD 370 for:

  • Victorian road trips beginning in Melbourne;

  • regional field or sales teams;

  • interstate visitors;

  • schools and general geographic reference;

  • moving between metropolitan and statewide planning;

  • anyone who wants one folded map rather than separate city and state products.

For a wall, the same basic two-view concept is available in the Victoria 370 UBD laminated wall map.

4. Victoria Street Directory UBD

Best Exhaustive Paper Street Reference — Subject to Availability

The Victoria Street Directory UBD is for people who need indexed, page-by-page reference rather than one-sheet overview.

Victoria Street Directory – UBD | Mapworld

The twentieth edition is described as a 483-page directory covering metropolitan Melbourne and more than 130 Victorian country cities and towns. This format remains useful when a team needs a repeatable grid-and-page reference, when a user prefers a printed index or when multiple locations must be compared without relying on a live connection.

Best For

It suits:

  • statewide trade and service businesses;

  • delivery and dispatch desks;

  • libraries and reference counters;

  • property and relocation work;

  • emergency or continuity kits;

  • users who prefer an indexed directory to a folded sheet.

5. Victoria Touring Maps for Trips Beyond Melbourne

Best for Weekends, Road Trips and Regional Discovery

Melbourne is often the first page of a Victorian journey rather than the final destination. The Victoria Hema Handy Map, 12th Edition is a compact touring-first option. Its symbols identify camping areas, caravan parks, fuel, rest areas, national parks and points of interest, supported by a town index and distance grid.

Victoria Handy Map – Hema | Mapworld

The larger Victoria Hema State Map, 9th Edition covers the state at 1:850,000 on a 1000 × 700 mm sheet. It includes Melbourne, Great Ocean Road and East Gippsland insets along with touring facilities.

Victoria State Map – Victoria – Hema | Mapworld

For corridor-specific journeys, consider the Melbourne to Adelaide Hema Touring Map or Melbourne to Sydney Hema Map. For the western coastal route, Mapworld’s Best Maps for the Great Ocean Road guide compares the stronger regional combinations in more detail.

6. Melbourne UBD 362 Wall Maps

Best Street-Oriented Melbourne Wall Map

The Melbourne UBD 362, 690 × 1000 mm Laminated Wall Map is the best compact wall map when central streets and general metropolitan context matter equally.

Melbourne UBD 362 Map 1020 x 1480mm Laminated Wall Map with Hang Rails — UBD laminated wall map with hang rails

At 690 × 1000 mm, it fits many offices, studies and smaller meeting rooms. Mapworld also offers enlarged versions:

The larger formats do not add new cartographic information, but they make existing labels easier to read and create more room for dots, notes and team discussion.

Best For

Choose UBD 362 for:

  • property and relocation offices;

  • trades and mobile services;

  • schools and urban-planning classes;

  • reception and visitor orientation;

  • delivery and route discussion;

  • people who want a city map with genuine inner-area street detail.

Folded-Laminated Versus Flat-Laminated

Some product options use a map that was folded before lamination. This is a cost-effective, durable working format, but fold creases can remain visible. A flat-laminated map is smoother and better for formal display, detailed photography or a premium meeting room. Confirm the selected option before checkout.

Mapworld’s Best Wall Maps of Melbourne for Business article goes deeper into UBD 362 sizes and commercial uses.

7. Melbourne & Region Hema Wall Map

Best General Greater Melbourne Wall Map

The Melbourne & Region Hema 700 × 1000 mm Laminated Wall Map is the stronger choice when the entire metropolitan footprint is more important than the central 1:25,000 street view.

Map of Greater Melbourne with roads and boundaries

At 1:115,000, it reaches from Yan Yean and Whittlesea in the north to the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island in the south, and from Werribee and Bacchus Marsh in the west to Healesville and the Dandenong Ranges in the east.

The map includes road hierarchy, suburbs and boundaries, postcodes, industrial areas, local government boundaries, transport corridors, parks, rivers and major infrastructure. That mix makes it an adaptable reference for homes, classrooms, showrooms, warehouses and planning areas.

Mapworld offers the cartography as:

Currency Caution

The current Hema product page does not state a publication year for this map. It mentions proposed and changing road infrastructure, which is exactly the kind of content that dates quickly. Treat the printed map as a stable metropolitan overview and check present-day infrastructure, closures and traffic through VicTraffic.

8. Melbourne Business 365 UBD Wall Map

Best for Sales, Logistics and Territory Planning

The Melbourne Business 365 UBD Wall Map is the specialist commercial choice.

Melbourne Business 365 Map UBD 1480 x 1980mm Laminated Wall Map

At 1:82,000 and approximately 1010 × 1350 mm, it is large enough to support serious planning without requiring a two-metre wall. It includes:

  • postcode boundaries;

  • local government areas;

  • industrial zones;

  • major and minor roads;

  • suburbs; and

  • radial distances from Melbourne GPO.

Those radial rings can be useful for service-radius pricing, delivery windows, branch coverage and initial catchment discussions. Postcode and LGA layers help teams compare operational areas that otherwise become confused in conversation.

Melbourne Business 365 Map Laminated Wall Map – detail view – UBD | Mapworld

Best For

Choose Business 365 for:

  • sales territories;

  • franchise and dealer areas;

  • delivery and courier operations;

  • field-service allocation;

  • industrial and B2B planning;

  • customer-density mapping;

  • depot and branch discussions;

  • property portfolios and expansion planning.

A hang-rail version is available for a finished, removable installation.

The Boundary Rule

Use a wall map for visual planning, not as the final legal source. Before contracts, formal allocations, government reporting or high-consequence operational decisions, verify postcodes with the Australia Post Postcode Finder and council information through Local Government Victoria.

9. Melbourne & Victoria Postcode Wall Map

Best Dedicated Postcode Reference

The Melbourne & Victoria Postcode Wall Map is the better choice when postcode geography is the primary subject rather than one layer among many.

Melbourne & Victoria Postcode 788 x 1036mm Laminated Wall Map

Victoria & Melbourne Postcode Laminated Wall Map – Australia – Cartodraft | Mapworld

Published by Cartodraft, the portrait map measures 788 × 1036 mm. It combines detailed Melbourne coverage with statewide postcode boundaries and numbers, a suburb and town index, major roads and other reference features.

It suits:

  • postcode-based sales and marketing;

  • delivery and distribution planning;

  • customer-service desks;

  • franchise and branch allocation;

  • statewide education and reference;

  • organisations that work across both Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The product page does not state a map edition or data date. That does not make the map unusable, but it does change how it should be used. Treat it as a strong visual index and check current operational postcode data through Australia Post.

10. Victoria Local Government Areas Wall Map

Best Dedicated Council-Boundary Reference

The Victoria Local Government Areas Wall Map shows every Victorian LGA in one statewide administrative view.

Victoria Local Government Areas Wall Map | Mapworld

At 1000 × 735 mm, it is useful for organisations whose work is organised by councils rather than postcodes. The uncluttered design prioritises LGA names and boundaries, with coastline, major rivers and neighbouring states supplying context.

It is well suited to:

  • government and community programs;

  • healthcare and education planning;

  • regional media and reporting;

  • utilities and infrastructure discussion;

  • council-facing consultants;

  • statewide service allocation.

The product page does not state a map edition or scale. Council and ward boundaries can be reviewed. Verify the current position through Local Government Victoria or the relevant council before formal or statutory use.

11. Victoria 370 UBD Wall Map

Best Wall Map for Moving Between Melbourne and the State

The Victoria 370 UBD 1000 × 690 mm Laminated Wall Map is a double-sided 2024 reference:

Victoria 370 UBD Map 1000 x 690mm Canvas Wall Map
Victoria 370 Map Laminated Wall Map – detail view – UBD | Mapworld
  • Victoria at 1:975,000; and

  • Greater Melbourne at 1:120,000.

It is an excellent fit for a business, school or household that regularly switches between metropolitan and regional questions. The limitation is display: only one side can face the room at a time unless the map is mounted in a reversible system. Decide which side will be used most often before choosing a permanent display method.

For a more detailed comparison of statewide wall maps, read Best Wall Maps for Victoria.

Choosing a Melbourne Wall-Map Finish

The cartography answers “what should the map show?” The finish answers “how will the map be used?”

Paper

Choose paper when:

  • the map will be framed under glass;

  • pins will be used on a corkboard;

  • the lowest-cost print is preferred;

  • a matte, low-glare surface matters;

  • the map will be handled infrequently.

Do not assume a paper map is delivered flat. Check the product option and delivery method.

Laminated

Choose lamination when:

  • the map is a working planning surface;

  • removable whiteboard markings are required;

  • dots or temporary labels will be applied;

  • the map will be touched frequently;

  • resistance to tears, moisture and stains matters.

Use only suitable non-permanent markers, test in an inconspicuous corner and remove marks regularly. Mapworld’s Why Laminated Maps Are Ideal for Business Use explains the operational benefits in more depth.

Laminated with Timber Hang Rails

Hang rails provide a ready-to-display result without a full frame. They are useful where the map may be moved or where drilling and mounting options are limited. Product pages advise allowing additional preparation time for custom-fitted rails.

Canvas

Canvas works best as decorative display. It is tactile, low-glare and visually warm, especially for historical maps. It is not the best choice for detailed annotation, grid references or small-type operational work.

Before ordering, measure the usable wall—not just the room—and consider the normal viewing distance. The complete wall-map buyer’s guide and wall-map size guide help with the decision.

A bushwalker reads a topographic map and compass from a forested lookout in the ranges east of Melbourne

Scale, sheet coverage, edition and datum all matter in topographic mapping. A broad regional sheet is useful for context; detailed field navigation usually needs a larger-scale, current map.

12. Melbourne J5505 AUSTopo 1:250,000

Best Current Broad Topographic Overview

The Melbourne J5505 AUSTopo 1:250,000 map is the best starting point for broad physical and regional context around Melbourne.

Melbourne J5505 AUSTopo 1:250,000 Map | Mapworld

At 1:250,000:

  • one centimetre represents 2.5 kilometres;

  • a standard sheet covers roughly 150 kilometres east–west by 110 kilometres north–south; and

  • the 800 × 500 mm map can show a much wider area than a local walking sheet.

  • map currency from 2025;

  • geographical and MGA coordinates;

  • GDA2020 horizontal datum;

  • AHD heights; and

  • Universal Transverse Mercator projection.

That makes it the more suitable choice when coordinate compatibility and current broad mapping matter.

Best For

Use it for:

  • regional terrain overview;

  • environmental and infrastructure context;

  • education and map-reading practice;

  • planning travel between multiple local areas;

  • understanding the relationship between Melbourne, the bay, plains, ranges and regional corridors;

  • choosing which more detailed map or sheet is needed next.

What 1:250,000 Cannot Do

A 1:250,000 map compresses too much ground for detailed bushwalking, off-track navigation or fine urban work. Small tracks may be generalised or omitted, and a millimetre on the sheet represents 250 metres on the ground.

Do not mistake current data for sufficient detail. Currency and scale solve different problems.

The map can be ordered on paper, waterproof Tyvek or laminated. Tyvek is the practical field choice; lamination is the better planning-room choice.

13. 7822 Melbourne 1:100,000 Topographic Map

Best Intermediate Regional Topographic View — with a Legacy-Series Warning

The 7822 Melbourne 1:100,000 Topographic Map occupies the useful middle ground between a broad 1:250,000 sheet and detailed 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 mapping.

7822 Melbourne 1:100k Topographic Map

At 1:100,000:

  • one centimetre represents one kilometre;

  • a standard sheet covers approximately 54 × 54 kilometres;

  • the contour interval is 20 metres; and

  • the 790 × 590 mm sheet shows terrain, streams, roads, buildings, vegetation, administrative boundaries and place names.

That can make it useful for regional analysis, teaching, historical comparison, infrastructure context and choosing detailed adjoining maps.

The Essential Currency and Datum Warning

The Australian 1:100,000 series has a currency range of 1961 to 2008. That is a series-wide range, not a promise that this individual sheet was updated in 2008. Read the marginal information on the supplied sheet to establish its actual edition and source dates.

The series may use:

  • geographical coordinates with either AMG or MGA;

  • AGD66 or GDA94 horizontal datum;

  • AHD heights; and

  • UTM projection.

Those differences matter. A coordinate read from an older AGD66 sheet can be displaced from a modern GDA2020 GPS or dataset. Never combine coordinates without identifying and transforming the datum correctly.

Urban roads, railways, built-up areas, tracks, boundaries and facilities may also have changed substantially. Use this map as a legacy topographic reference unless the specific sheet’s marginalia proves otherwise.

For current detailed Victorian topographic mapping, use the state’s Vicmap map-access service, which allows searches by address, locality, location, sheet name or sheet number and supports offline access through Vicmap Viewer.

14. Geelong and Sorrento 1:100,000 Companion Sheets

Useful When the Project Crosses a Sheet Edge

Topographic maps end at sheet boundaries, not at the natural end of a journey. Work extending west or south of the Melbourne sheet may require an adjoining map.

Two relevant possibilities in Mapworld’s Australia 1:100,000 Geoscience collection are:

Do not order from the sheet name alone. Use the map index and plot every planned location, approach and contingency route. If the activity touches an edge, carry the adjoining sheet. A route running along a map margin is one wrong turn away from leaving the page.

The same legacy-series currency and datum warnings apply to these sheets. Mapworld’s topographic scale guide and sheet-selection guide explain the selection process.

Which Topographic Scale Should You Choose?

Scale Ground distance represented by 1 cm Best Melbourne-region use Main limitation
1:25,000 250 m Detailed bushwalking, local fieldwork, terrain and track interpretation Small area per sheet; adjoining sheets often required
1:50,000 500 m Broader bushwalking, parks, field operations and regional detail Less fine detail than 1:25,000
1:100,000 1 km Regional terrain overview, education and intermediate planning The GA series is legacy mapping with variable currency and datum
1:250,000 2.5 km Broad regional context and multi-area planning Too general for detailed foot navigation

Paper, Waterproof or Laminated?

  • Paper is light, economical and easy to write on, but vulnerable to moisture and repeated folding.

  • Waterproof Tyvek is foldable and resilient for field use.

  • Laminated is durable and writable with suitable non-permanent markers, but bulkier and less convenient in wind.

Field-Safety Rule

A printed topographic map is not a live hazard service. Before entering parks or forests, check:

Carry the relevant map, compass and navigation skills; tell someone your plan; and never enter a closed area because an older map depicts a track.

For technique, read What Is a Topographic Map? and How to Read a Topographic Map.

Researchers compare a historical Melbourne street plan with a modern city map in an archive setting

Historical maps are evidence and interpretation. Compare them with modern mapping, archival sources and Traditional Owner knowledge rather than reading them as complete or neutral records.

15. Melbourne Historic Wall Map, 1901 — Sands & McDougall

Best Federation-Era Melbourne Street Plan

The Melbourne Historic Wall Map, 1901 captures the city at the moment of Australian Federation.

Published by Sands & McDougall, the 950 × 885 mm plan shows the central city and surrounding suburbs with streets, civic precincts, rail and river frontage. Rail yards, wharves, the Yarra’s bends, gardens, boulevards, tram and rail corridors, blocks and public buildings make Melbourne’s early-twentieth-century organisation visible.

It is especially strong for:

  • urban and architectural history;

  • family-history conversations;

  • comparing earlier and present street patterns;

  • classrooms, libraries and heritage spaces;

  • a meaningful Melbourne housewarming, retirement or civic gift.

Available paper, laminated and canvas finishes serve different purposes. Paper is best for conventional framing, lamination for close study in shared spaces, and canvas for decorative display.

16. Melbourne Tramways Wall Map, 1895

Best Map for Melbourne Transport History

The Melbourne Tramways Wall Map, 1895 reveals a city organised around cable trams, horse trams, railways and stations.

Melbourne Historic Tramways Wall Map 1901 Sands & McDougall | Mapworld

Originally published by Sands & McDougall, the 970 × 818 mm map uses concentric distance rings radiating from the centre. That combination of routes and distance provides a powerful way to study the relationship between transport and suburban development.

It is the best choice for:

  • tram and railway enthusiasts;

  • transport historians;

  • planning and urban-design teaching;

  • comparing former corridors with the present network;

  • homes or offices where Melbourne’s tram identity has personal meaning.

Do not use it to infer present routes. Pair it with current network information from Transport Victoria.

17. Pictorial Wall Map of Melbourne by O.J. Dale, 1934

Best Illustrated Historical View of Melbourne

O.J. Dale’s Pictorial Wall Map of Melbourne, 1934 was created to commemorate the centenary of colonial Melbourne.

Pictorial Map of Melbourne by Dale published 1934

The 860 × 750 mm design combines highways, tramlines, railways, parks, rivers, landmarks, early suburbs, architecture and illustrated references to customs, occupations and amusements. It is less a conventional street plan than a visual narrative of how Melbourne represented itself in 1934.

Choose it for:

  • an expressive Melbourne display piece;

  • local-history storytelling;

  • schools, libraries and museums;

  • design, illustration and cartographic study;

  • a gift with more personality than a purely technical plan.

The phrases and imagery of a 1934 centenary publication reflect their period. Read the map critically and alongside sources that centre Aboriginal history and continuing connection to Country.

18. Victoria Wall Map by H.E.C. Robinson, 1908

Best Historical State Context for Melbourne

The Victoria Wall Map by H.E.C. Robinson, 1908 expands the historical question beyond the city.

Victoria Wall Map by Robinson published 1908

Derived from the Lady Northcote Atlas, it shows townships, regional and parish boundaries, railways, telegraph lines and natural features. It is especially valuable for understanding the statewide transport and communication network within which Melbourne operated.

Choose it for:

  • Victorian regional and railway history;

  • family history beyond metropolitan Melbourne;

  • comparing settlement patterns with current roads and towns;

  • a coordinated historical wall with a detailed Melbourne plan.

The Melbourne Historic Map, 1902 is another strong city alternative. At 769 × 838 mm, it focuses on period streets, railways, docks, bridges, parks and civic features.

How to Read Historical Melbourne Maps Responsibly

Historical maps are valuable evidence, but they are not neutral or complete.

Ask:

  • Who made the map, and for what purpose?

  • What did the mapmaker choose to name, measure and emphasise?

  • Which boundaries were administrative inventions?

  • What transport, commerce or property system was being promoted?

  • Which people, places and forms of knowledge are absent?

  • Has the reproduction been enlarged, coloured or otherwise restored?

Use the State Library Victoria map collection and its digitised maps of Melbourne and suburbs to compare editions and primary sources. For cultural context, use Mapping Aboriginal Melbourne and seek guidance from the relevant Traditional Owners.

Mapworld’s Historical Wall Maps collection contains further Melbourne, Victoria, Australian and international reproductions. The article Why Historical Maps Make Beautiful and Meaningful Wall Art explains finish and display considerations.

Build the Right Melbourne Map Kit

One carefully chosen map may be enough. For more demanding use, a small kit is stronger than forcing one product to answer every question.

For a First Visit to Melbourne

For a New Resident or Relocating Family

For Sales, Service, Property or Logistics Teams

Avoid drawing a boundary directly from memory. Record whether a line represents a postcode, LGA, sales territory, franchise area, delivery radius or internal management zone.

For Schools, Universities and Training Rooms

Mapworld’s articles on how maps improve spatial thinking and how to read a map without sat nav offer useful teaching context.

For Bushwalkers and Outdoor Groups

  • a current detailed Vicmap or specialist recreational map at the appropriate scale

  • the AUSTopo Melbourne J5505 sheet for broad context

  • adjoining sheets where the route approaches an edge

  • a baseplate compass and the skill to use it

  • waterproof protection or a Tyvek print

  • downloaded offline mapping and a charged device as a supplement

  • current park, forest, emergency and weather checks

Paper Maps and Live Digital Information Work Better Together

Paper maps and digital services are strongest at different jobs.

A paper map is excellent for:

  • seeing a whole region at once;

  • comparing several routes without losing context;

  • group discussion;

  • learning the shape of the city;

  • planning territories and marking locations;

  • backup when battery or reception fails;

  • preserving a stable record of a plan or historical moment.

Live digital services are better for:

  • present traffic and incidents;

  • public-transport timetables and disruptions;

  • temporary closures;

  • emergencies and warnings;

  • rapidly changing construction and access;

  • current address and boundary verification.

Use the right official source:

Question Current source
How do I travel by train, tram or bus today? Transport Victoria Journey Planner and disruptions
Is a road affected by traffic, works or an incident? VicTraffic
Is a park or visitor site closed? Parks Victoria changed conditions
Is a state-forest road, track or site closed? Forest Fire Management Victoria closures
Are there current emergencies or warnings? VicEmergency
What is the current postcode? Australia Post Postcode Finder
Where can I find current Victorian topographic mapping? Vicmap map access and Vicmap Viewer
Where can I research original historical Melbourne maps? State Library Victoria maps

The objective is not “paper versus digital”. It is a resilient system in which each does the job it does best. Mapworld’s GPS vs Paper Maps article explores that complementary approach.

How to Choose the Right Melbourne Wall Map

Ask five questions before ordering.

1. What Must Be Visible at Once?

Choose UBD 362 for central streets plus metropolitan context, Hema for broad Greater Melbourne, Business 365 for operational layers, the postcode map for postcode geography, the LGA map for councils, and UBD 370 for Melbourne within Victoria.

2. How Far Away Will People Stand?

A 690 × 1000 mm map may work beside a desk. A team reading from across a meeting room may need the 1020 × 1480 or 1380 × 2000 mm UBD format.

3. Will the Map Be Marked?

Choose lamination for changing notes and removable dots. Choose paper on corkboard for pins. Choose canvas for display rather than daily annotation.

4. Which Boundary Actually Matters?

Suburb, postcode, LGA, electoral and internal sales boundaries are different. Buy the map that emphasises the required geography.

5. Does the Edition Match the Decision?

A decorative or educational map may remain useful for years. A route, service, boundary or field decision may require much newer data and an official live check.

Why Buy a Melbourne Map from Mapworld?

Mapworld brings the relevant products into one specialist range: folded metropolitan maps, state touring sheets, wall maps, business maps, topographic series and historical reproductions.

That matters because the central buying question is rarely “Do you have a map of Melbourne?” It is “Which map, scale, coverage, edition, material and size will answer this particular question?”

Browse the Victoria maps collection, Victoria wall maps, AUSTopo 1:250,000 series, 1:100,000 Geoscience series and historical wall maps. Check the individual product page for current availability, selected finish, delivery format and price.

Final Verdict: Which Is the Best Map of Melbourne?

There is no universal winner, but there are clear winners by task.

The Melbourne & Region Hema map is the best general portable overview. The Melbourne UBD 362 is the better choice for inner-city streets plus metropolitan context. Victoria UBD 370 is the best one-sheet combination of Melbourne and the state.

For walls, Melbourne UBD 362 is the best all-round street reference, Hema Melbourne & Region is the best broad metropolitan reference, and Business 365 is the best commercial planning surface.

For topography, start with the current Melbourne J5505 AUSTopo 1:250,000 for regional context. Use the 7822 Melbourne 1:100,000 only with its legacy currency and datum understood, and move to current detailed Vicmap or specialist mapping for actual field navigation.

For history, choose Melbourne 1901 for the Federation-era city, Melbourne Tramways 1895 for transport, O.J. Dale 1934 for an illustrated statement piece, and Victoria 1908 for the statewide story.

The best map is not the one with the most information. It is the one whose coverage, scale, edition and format match the decision in front of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best map of Melbourne for tourists?

The Melbourne & Region Hema map is the strongest general starting point because it shows the broad metropolitan area, CBD detail and public-transport diagrams. Add UBD 362 if detailed central streets matter.

What is the best detailed street map of Melbourne?

The Melbourne City Streets & Suburbs UBD 362 provides central Melbourne at 1:25,000 and Greater Melbourne at 1:120,000.

Which map covers both Melbourne and regional Victoria?

The Victoria State & Suburban UBD 370 combines a 1:975,000 state map with a 1:120,000 Greater Melbourne map.

What is the best Melbourne wall map for an office?

Choose the Melbourne UBD 362 wall map for general street and suburb reference, or the Melbourne Business 365 for territories, postcodes, LGAs and industrial zones.

What size Melbourne wall map should I buy?

Around 690 × 1000 mm suits close individual reference. A 1020 × 1480 mm map is easier for meeting rooms, while 1380 × 2000 mm is better for teams reading from across a larger planning or operations room. Measure the usable wall and viewing distance first.

What is the best map for Melbourne postcodes?

The Melbourne & Victoria Postcode Wall Map is the dedicated postcode choice. Verify current operational data through the Australia Post Postcode Finder.

What is the best map of Melbourne local government areas?

The Victoria Local Government Areas Wall Map is the dedicated statewide council reference. The Melbourne Business 365 also includes LGAs within a broader commercial map.

Which Melbourne map is best for sales territories?

The Melbourne Business 365 is the strongest starting point because it combines postcodes, LGAs, industrial zones, roads, suburbs and radial distances from the GPO.

Can I write on a laminated Melbourne wall map?

Yes, using a suitable non-permanent whiteboard marker. Test first, avoid permanent or solvent-heavy pens and remove marks regularly. Follow the care instructions on the product page.

What is the best map for the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne?

Start with a current Victoria touring map, then use a corridor-specific map or guide. See Mapworld’s Best Maps for the Great Ocean Road for a dedicated comparison.

What is the best topographic map of Melbourne?

For broad current regional context, choose Melbourne J5505 AUSTopo 1:250,000. For intermediate detail, 7822 Melbourne 1:100,000 is useful with its legacy-series warning. Detailed field use normally requires a current 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 Vicmap or specialist sheet.

Is a 1:250,000 map detailed enough for bushwalking?

Generally no. It is excellent for regional context, but one centimetre represents 2.5 kilometres. Select a current larger-scale map for detailed on-foot navigation.

Is the Melbourne 1:100,000 topographic map current?

Do not assume so. The Mapworld page states a series-wide currency range of 1961–2008 and possible AGD66 or GDA94 datum. Check the individual sheet marginalia and use current Vicmap or official data where currency matters.

What is the difference between paper, Tyvek and laminated topographic maps?

Paper is light and economical. Tyvek is waterproof, tear-resistant and foldable for field use. Lamination is durable and writable but bulkier.

How do I find the right topographic sheet for a location near Melbourne?

Plot the activity area and approaches on the relevant sheet index, then check whether the route approaches an edge. Mapworld’s sheet-selection guide explains the process, while Vicmap map access supports current Victorian searches by address, locality and sheet.

Which historical Melbourne map makes the best gift?

Choose the 1901 Sands & McDougall map for detailed city history, the 1895 tramways map for a transport enthusiast or O.J. Dale’s 1934 pictorial map for a more decorative statement.

Can I use a historical Melbourne map for navigation?

No. Historical maps are for research, comparison, education and display. Streets, transport, access, shorelines, place names and boundaries may have changed.

Can a paper map replace Google Maps or a live navigation app?

No single format replaces the other. Paper is better for overview, memory, discussion and backup; live services are better for present traffic, disruptions, closures and turn-by-turn guidance.

Where can I buy maps of Melbourne?

Mapworld supplies folded, wall, business, topographic and historical maps through its Victoria maps and Victoria wall maps collections, with individual pages showing current options and availability.
