Best Maps for Los Angeles

Best Maps for Los Angeles

Los Angeles is not one compact centre but a vast metropolitan landscape stretched between the Pacific Ocean, coastal hills, inland valleys and the San Gabriel Mountains. Its attractions are distributed across the City of Los Angeles, other cities within Los Angeles County and the wider Southern California road network. This guide compares the best Los Angeles street, visitor, laminated, regional, road, wall and historical maps for Australian travellers, businesses, educators, collectors and anyone who wants to understand LA beyond a traffic-coloured line on a phone.

By Christopher O’Keeffe, Managing Director of Mapworld

Los Angeles rewards map reading because distance is part of the destination. Downtown, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice, Griffith Park, the Getty, LAX and the coastal communities may all belong to a single holiday, but they do not form a compact walking centre. A useful map reveals the spaces between them: the freeway corridors, mountain barriers, neighbourhood grids, river, coast, airport approaches and many separate municipalities that make the region function.

A Los Angeles journey may involve:

  • hiring a car and adapting every day to live traffic;

  • using Metro Rail, bus, regional rail and rideshare services;

  • finding a hotel in a neighbourhood whose name does not indicate its distance from other attractions;

  • travelling between LAX, Hollywood, Downtown and the Westside;

  • combining Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu and other coastal places;

  • visiting major studios, museums, venues or theme parks spread across the metropolitan area;

  • driving to Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, San Diego, Santa Barbara or the desert;

  • beginning or ending a Pacific Coast, Route 66 or western United States road trip;

  • selecting a wall map for business, education or itinerary planning; or

  • comparing modern LA with California as it was mapped in 1954, 1974 or 1993.

No single map can perform all of those jobs equally well. A Hollywood street inset cannot show the road to Las Vegas. A statewide road map can explain the relationship between Los Angeles and San Francisco but cannot help with a turn in Downtown. A transit diagram clarifies lines and interchanges but not the real distance between neighbourhoods. A historical California map can reveal the growth of the region, yet it cannot confirm a current freeway closure, station name or venue entrance.

For most visitors, the strongest starting combination is:

  1. the Los Angeles Borch Folded Laminated Map for Greater Los Angeles plus detailed panels of Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice and LAX;

  2. the waterproof California Southern National Geographic Folded Map when the itinerary extends into the wider Southern California region;

  3. the current LA Metro maps and schedules, Caltrans QuickMap and offline digital mapping for live conditions and the final approach; and

  4. a broader California or western USA sheet if LA begins a road trip, such as the California Borch Folded Laminated Map, California & Nevada National Geographic Folded Map or USA West IGN Folded Map.

For a planning room or interior, Mapworld’s Wall Maps of Countries, Continents and Regions provide current geographic context. The Historical Wall Maps and Vintage National Geographic Maps collections show California and the American West as they were interpreted in earlier periods.

Browse the complete North America collection for city maps, regional maps, road atlases and wall maps. For the national comparison, read Best Maps for the United States. That guide covers the USA, Hawaii, California and New York; this article concentrates on Los Angeles and the mapping layers most useful in and around the metropolis.

A Note on the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County and Live Information

“Los Angeles” can describe several different geographies. The City of Los Angeles is a large, irregular municipality that includes Downtown, Hollywood, much of the Westside, the San Fernando Valley and a long corridor reaching south to the harbour. Los Angeles County is much larger and contains 88 incorporated cities as well as unincorporated communities. Places commonly grouped into an LA holiday—such as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Culver City, Pasadena, Burbank and Long Beach—are separate cities or jurisdictions within the wider county.

“Greater Los Angeles” is broader again. Its exact definition varies by purpose, but in travel it commonly means the connected metropolitan region extending into surrounding counties. A cover that says “Los Angeles” therefore needs a second question: does it mean the visitor core, the city, the county or the whole urban region?

Neighbourhood names are useful but not always administrative boundaries. Hollywood, Koreatown, Silver Lake, Echo Park, the Arts District, the Westside and South Bay are recognisable travel geographies, yet their informal edges may differ from official neighbourhood, postal or municipal lines. A good city map lets the coast, mountains, freeways, street grid and named districts work together.

Traffic, transit and access conditions can change minute by minute. Before travelling, consult LA Metro, its current line schedules and maps, Caltrans QuickMap, California highway conditions, SoCal 511 and the official Discover Los Angeles visitor site. A printed map supplies the durable geographic layer; official sources supply the live operational layer.

The Short Answer: Which Los Angeles Map Should I Buy?

If you want one physical map for a Los Angeles holiday, buy the Los Angeles Borch Folded Laminated Map. It solves LA’s scale problem by combining Greater Los Angeles at 1:60,000 with focused panels for Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Venice, LAX and the wider region. The soft-laminated format is water resistant, wipe clean and suitable for temporary dry-erase notes.

If the journey extends beyond the metropolis, add the California Southern National Geographic Folded Map. Its waterproof, tear-resistant construction and regional coverage make it the strongest companion for coastal drives, San Diego, Palm Springs, the deserts and southern national parks.

If Los Angeles begins a statewide road trip, choose the California Borch Map for compact handling, the California Marco Polo Map for a detailed 1:800,000 road view with useful city insets, or the California & Nevada National Geographic Map when waterproof durability and travel between LA, Las Vegas and major parks matter most.

For a working wall, choose the Los Angeles Wall Map. It shows the region from Simi Valley and Santa Clarita south to San Bernardino and San Clemente and adds a Downtown street inset. For statewide context, choose the California State Wall Map.

For historical display, the California 1954 National Geographic Map is the strongest starting point because it includes a dedicated Los Angeles inset and captures the state in the middle of the twentieth century. The Close-up USA map from 1974 adds classic road-trip character, while Coastal California 1993 provides a panoramic coastal view.

The right Los Angeles system is layered: city geography, live traffic and transit, regional roads and—when relevant—state or national context.

Why Los Angeles Needs More Than One Kind of Map

1. The Metropolitan-scale Problem

Los Angeles is often described as sprawling, but the practical problem is more specific: its important places sit in several geographical clusters separated by long urban corridors, hills and freeways. A traveller may be able to see Downtown from a viewpoint without being close to Santa Monica, or stay in a “central” neighbourhood that is poorly placed for a day on the coast.

A Greater Los Angeles map helps answer the questions a phone route can conceal:

  • Which attractions belong naturally in the same day?

  • Which routes cross mountain passes or major freeway junctions?

  • Is a hotel on the correct side of the region for the planned itinerary?

  • How far is the coast from Downtown in real geographic terms?

  • Where do separate cities such as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and Pasadena sit within the metropolitan whole?

2. The Paper-map-versus-live-traffic Problem

Printed maps preserve the geography of Los Angeles: coast, hills, streets, freeways, neighbourhoods and alternative corridors. They are excellent for understanding the plan before departure and keeping a broad view while a digital service concentrates on the next instruction.

They cannot predict a crash, lane closure, wildfire, event, construction project or sudden congestion. For that reason:

  • use the paper map to understand the network and compare broad alternatives;

  • use Caltrans QuickMap, SoCal 511 or another current source for live conditions; and

  • let a passenger consult the map, or stop safely before changing the plan.

Two travellers comparing a Los Angeles paper street map with a generic live traffic display in a safely parked left-hand-drive car

A paper map preserves the metropolitan network; live information shows what is happening on it now. Use both, and never study a map while driving. Illustrative AI-generated image; not a reproduction of any map product or navigation service discussed in this article.

3. The City-versus-county Problem

The City of Los Angeles has an unusual shape and does not contain every place visitors think of as LA. Santa Monica and Beverly Hills are independent cities. West Hollywood is separate from the City of Los Angeles even though Hollywood is within it. Burbank, Pasadena, Culver City and Long Beach each have their own municipal identities.

This matters for addresses, parking, local transport, venue rules, emergency information and business planning. A metropolitan map gives the shared geography, while official local sources provide the jurisdiction-specific detail.

4. The Neighbourhood Problem

Los Angeles is experienced through neighbourhoods, but their names can create false proximity. “Hollywood”, “West Hollywood”, “North Hollywood” and the Hollywood Hills are not interchangeable points. The Westside contains several districts and cities. “Downtown” refers to one important centre, not the centre of every visitor’s itinerary.

A wide city map lets travellers group places intelligently. A day around Downtown, the Arts District and nearby museums requires a different geographic plan from a day linking Beverly Hills, the Getty and Santa Monica.

5. The Car-versus-transit Problem

Many LA journeys are easiest by car, but not every visitor should assume that every trip must be driven. Metro Rail, buses and regional rail can be useful for particular corridors and destinations. A schematic transport map clarifies lines and transfers but does not preserve street distance. A road map preserves geography but cannot supply current arrivals or service alerts.

Use both formats, then check the current LA Metro journey information. The Borch map’s 2017 transport panel is useful historical orientation, not a substitute for the 2026 network.

6. The Coast, mountains and desert Problem

The Los Angeles region is constrained and shaped by physical geography. The Pacific defines its western edge; mountain ranges divide basins and valleys; canyons funnel roads; desert destinations lie beyond the urban region. A small phone window can make two places look equally accessible even when terrain and road structure produce very different journeys.

A Southern California or California–Nevada map restores the landscape. It explains why Malibu, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree and the mountain communities require different regional approaches.

7. The California-road-trip Problem

Los Angeles is a natural beginning or end for a drive to San Diego, Santa Barbara, Big Sur, San Francisco, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon or California’s national parks. At that point three levels of mapping become useful:

  1. a Los Angeles city map;

  2. a Southern California or state map; and

  3. a western USA or national overview for the complete itinerary.

Each level answers a different question. Trying to make one sheet do all three produces either clutter or insufficient detail.

8. The Wall-map and historical Problem

A folded map is made to travel; a wall map is made to remain visible. LA wall maps support business territories, visitor planning, education, property discussions and interiors connected with the city. Historical maps add another function: they reveal how publishers represented California before later freeways, suburbs and metropolitan growth changed the reader’s mental picture.

Understanding Los Angeles Map Scale

Scale tells the reader how much the real world has been reduced. A larger-scale map shows a smaller area in greater detail; a smaller-scale map covers more territory with less detail.

Map or panel Scale What 1 cm represents Best use
Los Angeles Borch — Hollywood 1:15,000 150 m Detailed Hollywood orientation
Los Angeles Borch — Downtown 1:17,000 170 m Downtown streets and landmarks
Los Angeles Borch — Santa Monica, Venice and LAX 1:20,000 200 m Coastal and airport-focused local views
Los Angeles Borch — Greater Los Angeles 1:60,000 600 m Metropolitan relationships and main routes
Los Angeles Borch — regional overview 1:225,000 2.25 km Wider Southern California orientation
California Marco Polo 1:800,000 8 km Detailed regional road touring
California Hallwag 1:1,000,000 10 km California and Nevada road overview
California Borch 1:1,200,000 12 km Compact statewide planning
California & Nevada National Geographic 1:1,300,000 13 km Waterproof regional adventure planning
USA West IGN 1:2,000,000 20 km Western USA route strategy
USA Michelin 761 1:3,450,000 34.5 km National route planning

The comparison explains why the Borch product uses multiple panels. At 1:15,000, one centimetre can distinguish several Hollywood blocks. At 1:60,000, the same centimetre shows a much broader part of the city. At 1:1,300,000, it represents 13 kilometres—useful for LA to Las Vegas, but not for finding a venue entrance.

For local LA travel, roughly 1:15,000 to 1:60,000 is the practical range depending on whether the task is street detail or metropolitan orientation. For Southern California and interstate touring, scales between 1:800,000 and 1:1,300,000 balance route structure with a broad field. For a national map, 1:3,450,000 is strategic rather than turn-by-turn.

1. Los Angeles Borch Folded Laminated Map

The Best Overall Map of Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Borch Folded Laminated Map is the strongest single physical map for most visitors because it treats Los Angeles as a set of connected scales rather than one compact centre.

Los Angeles Folded Laminated Map – Borch | Mapworld

The sheet opens to approximately 660 × 494 mm and folds to about 243 × 110 × 8 mm, weighing roughly 61 grams. Its soft-laminated surface is water repellent, wipe clean and suitable for temporary notes with an appropriate dry-erase marker.

The map contains:

  • Greater Los Angeles at 1:60,000;

  • Downtown Los Angeles at 1:17,000;

  • Santa Monica and Venice at 1:20,000;

  • Hollywood at 1:15,000;

  • Los Angeles International Airport at 1:20,000;

  • Los Angeles and region at 1:225,000; and

  • a schematic public-transport panel.

It highlights major attractions such as Griffith Observatory, the Getty, Rodeo Drive, Venice Beach and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, together with transport hubs and principal routes.

Why the Multi-panel Format Works

One day may move between neighbourhood scale, metropolitan scale and regional scale. The Hollywood panel helps with the immediate visitor district. The Greater LA panel reveals how Hollywood relates to Downtown and the coast. The regional panel places the whole city within Southern California. LAX receives its own view because the airport journey is a distinct navigation task.

Los Angeles Folded Laminated Map – reverse and index – Borch | Mapworld

Strengths

  • The best combination of LA scales in one portable product.

  • Dedicated panels for the visitor areas most commonly combined.

  • Soft-laminated, water-resistant and wipe-clean format.

  • Compact enough for a day bag or glove box.

  • Useful as a physical backup when a phone battery or signal fails.

  • Supports temporary route notes with a suitable marker.

Limitations

  • Even 1:60,000 cannot name every street across the full metropolitan region.

  • A schematic transport panel does not show live service or exact street distance.

  • Printed maps cannot account for real-time traffic, wildfire closures or event access.

Best For

First visits, multi-neighbourhood itineraries, hire-car travel, airport orientation, family planning and anyone who wants a compact physical overview of LA.

2. California Southern National Geographic Folded Map

The Best Waterproof Map for the Wider Los Angeles Region

The California Southern National Geographic Folded Map is the best second map for travellers moving beyond metropolitan Los Angeles.

It is printed on waterproof, tear-resistant synthetic material and opens to approximately 660 × 965 mm, folding to about 95 × 228 mm. It includes Southern California road coverage and detailed views or visitor information for the Los Angeles area, Santa Barbara, Oxnard and Ventura, Palm Springs, San Diego, Sequoia and Kings Canyon and other regional centres.

California Southern Folded Map – National Geographic | Mapworld

The map is particularly useful for:

  • understanding the coast north and south of Los Angeles;

  • planning the broad direction to San Diego, Palm Springs and desert destinations;

  • linking the metropolis with national parks and recreation areas;

  • seeing scenic-road and protected-area context; and

  • carrying a durable backup through beach, desert and mountain conditions.

This is an order-on-demand product with an estimated 7–10 working-day lead time, so please order well before departure.

Strengths

  • Waterproof and tear-resistant.

  • Much wider coverage than a city map.

  • Strong terrain, park and recreation context.

  • Los Angeles metropolitan and visitor information supports the transition from city to region.

  • Large double-sided working sheet that folds into a narrow travel format.

Limitations

  • It cannot match Borch’s detailed Hollywood, Downtown, coastal and LAX panels.

  • Regional coverage is not a substitute for current traffic or park conditions.

  • The large unfolded sheet is better for pre-trip planning or a stationary consultation than for reading inside a moving vehicle.

Best For

Southern California road trips, coastal journeys, San Diego extensions, desert travel, park itineraries and travellers who prioritise waterproof durability.

3. California Borch Folded Laminated Map

The Best Compact Statewide Companion

The California Borch Folded Laminated Map is the most compact all-round statewide option. The 12th edition, published in 2022, maps California at 1:1,200,000 and includes a dedicated Yosemite National Park inset.

California Folded Laminated Map – Borch | Mapworld

The map opens to approximately 660 × 494 mm, folds to about 243 × 110 × 8 mm and weighs roughly 60 grams. Like the Los Angeles Borch map, it is soft laminated, water resistant and wipe clean.

California Folded Laminated Map – reverse and index – Borch | Mapworld

California Folded Laminated Map – reverse and index – Borch | Mapworld

Choose it when the itinerary extends from LA to several parts of California but luggage space is limited. It gives enough room to compare coast, Central Valley, Sierra Nevada and desert routes without becoming an unwieldy sheet.

California Folded Laminated Map – reverse and index – Borch | Mapworld

Its compactness imposes limits. At 1:1,200,000, one centimetre represents 12 kilometres. It is a strategic touring map, not a daily LA street plan or detailed national-park trail map.

4. California Marco Polo Map

The Best Detailed Road Map for a California–Southwest Loop

The California Marco Polo Map provides the largest-scale regional road view in this comparison at 1:800,000. It extends beyond California into useful parts of Nevada and Arizona and includes large-scale city insets for:

  • Los Angeles;

  • Beverly Hills;

  • San Francisco; and

  • Las Vegas.

A distance table, comprehensive index and fold-out regional overview support classic loops linking Los Angeles, the Pacific Coast, San Francisco, Yosemite, Palm Springs, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon approaches.

California Marco Polo Map

Choose Marco Polo when road detail and city insets matter more than waterproof construction. The Los Angeles and Beverly Hills insets are useful supporting views, but they do not replace Borch’s broader set of LA panels.

5. California Hallwag Map

The Best Large Conventional California and Nevada Road Sheet

The California Hallwag Map maps California and Nevada at 1:1,000,000. It opens to approximately 1380 × 1000 mm and folds to about 250 × 130 × 12 mm.

California USA Map – Hallwag | Mapworld

The large sheet combines a conventional road network with relief, attractions and scenic routes. Supporting insets include:

  • Los Angeles;

  • San Francisco;

  • San Diego;

  • Sacramento;

  • San Jose;

  • Las Vegas;

  • Riverside and San Bernardino;

  • Yosemite;

  • Sequoia and Kings Canyon;

  • Death Valley;

  • Redwood National Park; and

  • Crater Lake.

An accompanying multilingual guide booklet supplies the place index and tourism information. This is an unusually comprehensive paper road-planning package, particularly for a journey connecting LA with several cities and parks.

The trade-off is physical size and conventional paper construction. It is best opened on a hotel table or before departure, not while driving. Search results showed inconsistent availability at the research date, so confirm the live product page before making it the centre of a map kit.

6. California & Nevada National Geographic Folded Map

The Best Waterproof Map for Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Parks

The California & Nevada National Geographic Folded Map is produced at 1:1,300,000, opens to approximately 950 × 635 mm and is printed on waterproof, tear-resistant synthetic material.

California & Nevada Folded Map – National Geographic | Mapworld

It links Los Angeles with San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas and wider parts of the Southwest. The map highlights major roads, scenic highways, terrain, protected lands and destinations including Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Death Valley, the Mojave Desert, Lake Tahoe and the western Grand Canyon region.

California & Nevada Folded Map – reverse and index – National Geographic | Mapworld

Choose it for a durable LA–Las Vegas journey, national-park circuit or trip that moves repeatedly between coast, mountains and desert. Choose Marco Polo or Hallwag when the largest possible road scale and urban insets are more important.

For most travellers, Borch LA plus Southern California National Geographic is the strongest two-map combination. Add a statewide sheet only when the itinerary extends substantially beyond Southern California.

7. USA West IGN Folded Map

The Best Map for a Wider Western United States Journey

The USA West IGN Folded Map covers the western United States from Mexico to Canada at 1:2,000,000. It is the right scale when Los Angeles is one stop in a journey through several western states.

USA West Folded Map – IGN | Mapworld

The map connects California with Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington, the Rocky Mountain states, and major western national parks. It is especially useful for comparing:

  • Los Angeles to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon;

  • California with Utah’s national parks;

  • Pacific Coast and inland alternatives;

  • southern and northern approaches to the Sierra Nevada; and

  • a multi-state journey too large for one California sheet.

It does not contain the street detail needed inside Los Angeles. Use it as the middle layer between city and national mapping.

8. USA Michelin Map 761

The Best Complete United States Overview

The USA Michelin Map 761 maps the contiguous United States at approximately 1:3,450,000 and includes separate insets for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

It unfolds to about 1450 × 1000 mm and folds to approximately 250 × 113 mm. The map shows interstate highways, US and state routes, scenic roads, national parks, borders, city distances and the physical framework of mountains, rivers, lakes and deserts.

Choose Michelin 761 when LA is one point in a cross-country itinerary or when the entire country needs to be visible on one sheet. At this scale, one centimetre represents 34.5 kilometres. It cannot be enlarged conceptually into an LA city map; its role is national strategy.

9. Route 66 Map ITMB

The Best Specialist Map for a Journey Ending in Santa Monica

The Route 66 Map ITMB follows the historic road from Chicago to Santa Monica across Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Route 66 Map ITMB – detail view – ITM | Mapworld

Route 66 Map ITMB – detail view – ITM | Mapworld

The double-sided folded map places historic alignments within the modern road network and marks roadside towns, attractions, detours and city insets. It is a cultural-route map rather than a general Los Angeles guide.

Choose it when the historic highway is the trip's organising idea. Add the Los Angeles Borch map for the final metropolitan approach and current road information for every operating decision. Route 66 alignments and business landmarks have changed over time, so treat historical interest and current navigation separately.

Choosing a Los Angeles Map by Journey

A First Visit with a Hire Car

Begin with the Los Angeles Borch map and download offline mapping before leaving Wi-Fi. Use Borch to group destinations and recognise the major freeway corridors; use live traffic information for the day’s sequence. Add the Southern California National Geographic map if any day takes you outside the metropolis.

Do not attempt to refold or interpret a large map while driving. Plan before departure, appoint a passenger as navigator or stop safely.

A Car-free or Car-light Visit

Use Borch for physical geography and current LA Metro schedules and maps for the operating network. Select accommodation only after checking the exact journey to the planned attractions. A neighbourhood that looks central on a broad tourist list may not be convenient for every day.

Metro, buses, regional rail, walking and rideshare can form an effective mixed system. The paper map shows how the pieces fit; live sources show the current service.

Downtown Los Angeles

Borch’s 1:17,000 Downtown panel is the appropriate local view. It helps connect the Civic Centre, Bunker Hill, Historic Core, Arts District, Union Station and nearby cultural sites.

Use current venue and transit information for entrances, station access, event closures and opening hours. Downtown is one dense part of LA, not a geographic substitute for the entire metropolis.

Hollywood and Griffith Park

Borch’s 1:15,000 Hollywood panel offers the largest scale in the product and is well suited to the visitor district. The Greater LA panel then restores the relationship with Griffith Park, Studio City, Downtown, Beverly Hills and the Westside.

For walking inside Griffith Park, use current official park information. A city map can locate the park and approaches but may not show every trail condition, closure or facility.

Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and the Westside

These names illustrate the boundary problem: they belong to adjoining but different municipal and neighbourhood geographies. Borch’s Greater LA view is the best all-round orientation. Marco Polo adds Beverly Hills as a dedicated inset for a wider road trip.

Group Westside attractions before setting out. Repeated east–west crossings can consume more of a holiday than the map’s straight-line distance suggests.

Santa Monica, Venice and the Coast

Borch provides a dedicated 1:20,000 Santa Monica and Venice panel. Use it for the local relationship between beach districts, then use the Greater LA panel to plan the return toward Hollywood, Downtown or LAX.

The Southern California National Geographic map becomes more valuable when the day continues north towards Malibu or south through the coastal cities.

LAX and the First or Last Day

Borch’s LAX panel is a useful physical overview, but airport terminals, pick-up systems, roadworks and ground transport can change. Check the official airport and operator information before departure.

Do not build an ambitious cross-city sightseeing day around a tight flight connection. The map reveals the distance; live traffic and airport instructions reveal the operational risk.

Families, Studios and Theme Parks

LA’s major family attractions are distributed across several parts of the region. Use the Greater LA panel to group places, then use each venue’s official arrival and parking information.

The laminated Borch format is useful for shared itinerary notes. A family can mark one colour for fixed bookings and another for flexible alternatives, then erase the plan at the end of the day.

Pasadena, Burbank and the Valleys

These areas sit beyond the tight visitor core and demonstrate the value of the 1:60,000 metropolitan panel. Check that a hotel, studio or event venue appears within the selected map view before relying on it for local streets.

Use current local or digital mapping for the final address. The paper map’s task is to prevent the broader journey from becoming a sequence of disconnected turn prompts.

Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway

Use Los Angeles Borch for the metropolitan departure and Southern California National Geographic for the wider coast. Continue with a statewide map if the road trip reaches Santa Barbara, Big Sur or San Francisco.

Coastal roads are vulnerable to crashes, landslides, wildfire impacts, weather and construction. Check Caltrans QuickMap and highway conditions on the day rather than assuming the printed route is open.

Palm Springs and Joshua Tree

The Southern California National Geographic map is the best starting point. The California & Nevada map adds broader desert and terrain context when Las Vegas, Death Valley or the Grand Canyon is included.

Use current National Park Service and weather information for park roads, entrances, extreme heat and seasonal restrictions. A regional map is not a trail map.

San Diego Extension

The Southern California National Geographic map connects Los Angeles with San Diego and supplies regional and city context. Marco Polo or Hallwag is useful if San Diego forms part of a longer California loop.

Los Angeles to Las Vegas

Choose the California & Nevada National Geographic map for waterproof durability or Marco Polo for its 1:800,000 road scale and city insets. Add USA West IGN if the journey extends to Utah, Arizona or several national parks.

Pacific Coast Journey to San Francisco

Use Los Angeles Borch for the city, Southern California National Geographic for the initial region and a California map for the complete coast. The California Borch is the compact choice; Marco Polo provides more road detail; Hallwag offers the largest conventional sheet; Coastal California 1993 is a beautiful historical companion but not a current road authority.

Traveller planning a Los Angeles and Southern California coastal road trip with a regional paper map

A regional map connects metropolitan Los Angeles with the Pacific coast, inland valleys, deserts and the wider California road network. Illustrative AI-generated image; not a reproduction of any map product discussed in this article.

Route 66 or a Cross-country Journey

Use the ITMB Route 66 map when the historic route is the subject, Michelin 761 when the United States as a whole must remain visible and Los Angeles Borch for the final city. Three maps are not duplication: they show national, cultural-route and city geography at the scales each requires.

10. Los Angeles Wall Map

The Best Current Los Angeles Planning Wall Map

The Los Angeles Wall Map measures approximately 1000 × 673 mm and combines two complementary views:

  • a broad regional map extending from Simi Valley and Santa Clarita in the north to San Bernardino and San Clemente in the south; and

  • a detailed street-level inset of Downtown Los Angeles.

The regional view identifies major roads, parks, waterways, public spaces, neighbourhoods and visitor locations. The Downtown inset supplies the detail that would be lost if the whole metropolis were shown at one uniform scale.

  • 160 gsm paper;

  • laminated with 80-micron gloss encapsulation;

  • laminated with timber hang rails;

  • 395 gsm HP Professional Matte Canvas; and

  • canvas with timber hang rails.

Choose paper for framing, lamination for annotation, canvas for decorative display or rails for a ready-to-hang format. The map is particularly useful for tourism, hospitality, education, real estate, logistics, event planning and a family itinerary wall.

No wall map should be the sole operational traffic source. Keep its publication details visible and combine it with current routing data.

11. California State Wall Map

The Best Modern State Context for Los Angeles

The California State Wall Map measures approximately 860 × 1000 mm at 1:1,300,000. It identifies major and secondary roads, freeway interchanges, distances, landmarks and recreational areas across the state.

California State Wall Map

Choose it when the wall needs to connect Los Angeles with San Diego, San Francisco, the Central Valley, Sierra Nevada, deserts and the state’s parks. It is a better statewide itinerary and classroom map than the city wall map, but it cannot provide metropolitan street detail.

The current edition is available in paper, laminated, canvas and hang-railed formats and is printed in Australia.

12. United States National Geographic Wall Maps

The Best National Context for a Los Angeles Journey

The United States National Geographic 1106 × 773 mm Wall Map is the strongest standard-sized national wall reference. At 1:4,561,000, it combines political boundaries, physical geography, roads and major places on a sheet large enough for home, office or classroom use.

United States of America Wall Map – National Geographic | Mapworld

The United States National Geographic 1759 × 1219 mm Wall Map is the large-format alternative. Choose it when route marking, group teaching or viewing from several metres away matters more than wall economy.

Neither is an LA navigation map. Their value is strategic: Los Angeles becomes visible as a Pacific gateway, a Route 66 endpoint and one city within a continental road and physical landscape.

Paper, Laminated, Canvas or Timber Hang Rails?

Paper

Paper provides crisp printed detail and is normally the most economical choice. Select it for professional framing, temporary display or mounting on a suitable backing board. Protect it from moisture, repeated handling and damaging adhesives.

Laminated

Lamination protects a working map and supports temporary annotation with a suitable whiteboard marker. Test the marker in an inconspicuous place and erase it promptly. This is the practical finish for itinerary planning, classrooms, logistics and hospitality teams.

Gloss laminate may reflect strong light, so plan the position before installation.

Canvas

Canvas gives the map a textured, artwork-like presence and suits homes, offices and hospitality interiors. Mapworld uses 395 gsm HP Professional Matte Canvas with pigment inks for the Los Angeles wall map and many historical reproductions.

Canvas is not designed for frequent annotation. Confirm that labels will remain readable at the chosen size and viewing distance.

Timber Hang Rails

Timber rails provide a clean, reversible display without a conventional frame. They work well in rented spaces and rooms where the map may be changed later. Allow up to 10 working days for made-to-order hang-railed products where indicated.

13. California 1954 National Geographic Map

The Best Historical California Map for Los Angeles

The California 1954 National Geographic Map is the strongest historical choice for a reader specifically interested in Los Angeles. Published in June 1954, it was National Geographic’s first map devoted to California.

California - Published 1954 by National Geographic — historic National Geographic map print

The portrait sheet measures approximately 761 × 962 mm at 1:1,305,216. It combines statewide geography and descriptive travel notes with detailed inset maps of:

  • Los Angeles;

  • San Francisco;

  • San Diego;

  • the San Francisco Bay Region; and

  • Yosemite Valley.

The Los Angeles inset is especially valuable because it creates a direct historical comparison with the present metropolitan region. The main map captures California during an era of rapid population growth, freeway construction and expanding automobile tourism.

Choose it for:

  • Los Angeles and California history;

  • mid-century architecture and planning discussions;

  • family histories connected with post-war migration;

  • travel and tourism research;

  • classrooms comparing historical and current urban form; or

  • a sophisticated California-themed wall.

We reproduce the map in Australia using pigment-based inks and offer paper, laminated, canvas and timber hang-rail formats.

14. Close-up USA: California and Nevada, 1974

The Best Vintage California Road-trip Map

The Close-up USA: California and Nevada Map was published by National Geographic in June 1974 as part of the Close-up: U.S.A. series.

Close-up USA, California and Nevada - Published 1974 wall map – National Geographic | Mapworld

The sheet measures approximately 578 × 887 mm and treats California and Nevada as one connected region of coast, mountains, valleys and desert. Travel information and historical notes give the map a narrative quality beyond a simple road inventory.

For Los Angeles enthusiasts, the 1974 map is valuable because it places the city within the mature post-war road-trip landscape: California touring, Las Vegas, desert crossings and national parks are presented as one regional experience.

This is the best vintage choice for a road-trip-themed interior, classic-Americana collection or classroom discussion of tourism and regional identity.

15. California and Nevada: Storied Realm of Glitter and Greenery, 1974

The Best Illustrated Companion Poster

The California and Nevada: Storied Realm of Glitter and Greenery is the illustrated companion to the 1974 Close-up USA map.

Close-up USA, California and Nevada Theme - Published 1974 wall map – National Geographic | Mapworld

Also measuring approximately 578 × 887 mm, it combines travel-poster design, regional history, cultural information and a San Francisco map. It is less directly useful for studying Los Angeles than the main Close-up map, but it creates a strong paired display and captures the promotional language of western travel in the 1970s.

Choose the map for cartographic reference; choose the poster for illustration and narrative; hang both together when the relationship between geography and tourism promotion is the subject.

16. California 1993 National Geographic Map

The Best Compact Late-twentieth-century California Reference

The California 1993 National Geographic Map was published in July 1993. Mapworld lists the compact portrait sheet at approximately 253 × 792 mm.

California - Published 1993 by National Geographic — historic National Geographic map print

The map emphasises California’s extraordinary environmental range: Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the Gold Country, Central Valley, coast and deserts. It provides a useful late-twentieth-century companion to the 1954 map, though the unusual narrow format gives it a more decorative and selective role.

Choose it for a small wall, a chronological California map group or an interior that needs a tall, narrow piece.

17. Coastal California 1993 National Geographic Map

The Best Panoramic Historical Coast Map

The Coastal California 1993 National Geographic Map measures approximately 792 × 253 mm in a long landscape format. It follows California’s Pacific edge from the northern redwood country to the beaches and cities of Southern California.

Coastal California - Published 1993 wall map – National Geographic | Mapworld

Its panoramic proportions make it especially effective above a desk, console or long piece of furniture. It complements a Los Angeles article because the city appears as part of a continuous coast rather than an isolated metropolis.

Use it as historical travel art and regional interpretation, not as a current Pacific Coast Highway map. The coast is vulnerable to closures and changing access conditions that a 1993 publication cannot represent.

Which Historical California Map Is Best for a Los Angeles Collection?

Interest Best place to begin
Los Angeles city inset and mid-century California California 1954 National Geographic Map
Classic California–Nevada road-trip geography Close-up USA: California and Nevada, 1974
Illustrated western travel and promotional design Storied Realm of Glitter and Greenery, 1974
Compact 1990s state reference California 1993 National Geographic Map
Long panoramic coastal display Coastal California 1993 National Geographic Map

The 1954 map is the strongest single choice for LA because its dedicated city inset creates the clearest link with the modern metropolis. The 1974 map is better for road-trip nostalgia. Coastal California 1993 is the most distinctive shape for a narrow horizontal wall.

How to Read Historical Los Angeles and California Maps Responsibly

Historical maps are records of both geography and publishing choices. A careful reader asks:

  • Who made the map, for whom and for what purpose?

  • Does the product reproduce a surveyed reference map, a tourist map or an illustrated poster?

  • Which roads, municipalities and place names belonged to the publication date?

  • How did the publisher represent Indigenous presence, migration, urban growth and environmental change?

  • What features were emphasised, simplified or omitted?

  • Is a Los Angeles inset drawn at a different scale from the state map?

  • Has the reproduction size changed from the original sheet?

Period language may be outdated or offensive. That terminology belongs to the source’s historical context and should not be repeated uncritically. In classrooms or research, identify the publisher and date, compare the map with current mapping and consult other historical sources.

A reproduction’s listed dimensions describe the wall product, not necessarily the scale relationship of the original printing. Historical maps should never be used for current driving, property boundaries, hazard assessment or emergency decisions.

What a Printed Los Angeles Map Does Not Replace

A paper map provides battery-free geography, a shared view and a stable record of the road network as published. It helps travellers group destinations, recognise major alternatives and understand the landscape around a route.

It does not replace current official information for:

  • freeway speeds, crashes, lane closures and road works;

  • wildfire, flood, landslide, earthquake or severe-weather impacts;

  • Metro service, station access and real-time arrivals;

  • airport terminals, pick-up systems and ground transport;

  • national-park roads, permits and seasonal restrictions;

  • venue entrances, parking, event closures and opening hours;

  • evacuation orders or emergency advice; or

  • vehicle, toll, parking and local regulatory requirements.

Use Caltrans QuickMap and California highway conditions for current state-road information, LA Metro for the operating transport network and the relevant official venue, park or local-government source for access details.

The paper map and phone are not rivals. The paper map answers “how does this region fit together?” The live service answers “what can I do now?” Read GPS vs Paper Maps: Why Paper Maps Still Matter in a Digital World for the broader case.

Why Buy a Los Angeles Map from Mapworld?

Mapworld has helped Australians find the right maps for more than 30 years. It is Australia’s only remaining dedicated map shop and the largest map shop in the Southern Hemisphere, bringing together specialist products that would otherwise be scattered across overseas publishers and suppliers.

That breadth matters for Los Angeles because the useful purchase is rarely just “a map of LA”. The traveller may need:

  • a soft-laminated metropolitan map;

  • a waterproof Southern California road map;

  • a California–Nevada touring sheet;

  • a western United States overview;

  • a current wall map in a writeable finish;

  • a historical Los Angeles inset; or

  • a vintage California map printed on canvas.

Mapworld’s North America collection brings together the travel choices. Its Wall Maps of Countries, Continents and Regions, Historical Wall Maps and Vintage National Geographic Maps extend the range into business, education, collecting and interior design.

Mapworld also prints many wall and historical maps in Australia on paper, laminated media and HP Professional Matte Canvas, with optional timber hang rails. If you are uncertain about coverage, scale, finish or availability, contact Mapworld before ordering.

Final Verdict

The best physical map for most Los Angeles visitors is the Los Angeles Borch Folded Laminated Map. Its Greater LA, Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice, LAX and regional views solve the city’s scale problem better than a conventional single-scale sheet.

Add the waterproof California Southern National Geographic Map when the journey leaves the metropolis. For a statewide trip, choose California Borch for compact handling, Marco Polo for road detail or California & Nevada National Geographic for waterproof regional coverage. Add USA West IGN or Michelin 761 when Los Angeles becomes one stage of a larger American journey.

For a wall, the Los Angeles Wall Map is the strongest metropolitan reference and the California State Wall Map supplies the wider state. For historical display, the 1954 National Geographic map is the best LA-specific choice because it includes a dedicated Los Angeles inset.

Above all, let each map do the job it was designed for. Use Borch for city geography, official services for live traffic and transit, a regional map for coast and desert, a national map for the continental journey and a historical map for comparison and meaning. Los Angeles makes far more sense when those layers are visible together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best overall map of Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles Borch Folded Laminated Map is the best overall physical map. It combines Greater Los Angeles with detailed panels of Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice, LAX and the wider region.

What is the best map for a first visit to Los Angeles?

Choose the Los Angeles Borch map and pair it with current LA Metro maps, Caltrans QuickMap and offline digital navigation. Borch supplies the geographic overview; live services supply traffic and operating information.

Is the Los Angeles Borch map waterproof?

It is soft laminated, water repellent and wipe clean. It is well suited to repeated handling and minor spills, although it should still be cared for rather than treated as indestructible.

Can I write on the Los Angeles Borch map?

Yes. A suitable dry-erase marker can be used for temporary route notes. Test the pen first and erase marks promptly according to the product-care guidance.

How current is the Los Angeles Borch map?

Mapworld lists the 21st edition, published in 2017. The metropolitan geography remains valuable, but road, transit, venue and airport information must be checked against current official sources.

Which Los Angeles map shows Hollywood?

The Borch map includes a dedicated Hollywood panel at 1:15,000, the largest scale among its LA views. It also shows Hollywood within the wider metropolitan context.

Which map is best for Santa Monica and Venice?

The Los Angeles Borch map includes a dedicated Santa Monica and Venice panel at 1:20,000. Use the Southern California National Geographic map if the coastal journey continues towards Malibu, Ventura or farther afield.

Which map is best for LAX?

Borch includes a dedicated LAX panel at 1:20,000. Check current official airport information for terminals, pick-up systems, construction and ground transport before travelling.

Does the Los Angeles map show public transport?

Borch includes a schematic public-transport panel, but it reflects the 2017 edition. Use current LA Metro maps and schedules for the operating network, service alerts and arrivals.

What is the difference between Los Angeles city and Los Angeles County?

The City of Los Angeles is one large municipality. Los Angeles County contains that city plus Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Pasadena, Burbank, Long Beach and many other cities and communities. A metropolitan map may cross numerous jurisdictions.

Do I need a paper map if I have live traffic navigation?

Live navigation is essential for LA traffic, but a paper map reveals the whole network, neighbourhood relationships and alternative corridors without depending on power or signal. Use paper for the plan and live data for present conditions.

What is the best waterproof Southern California map?

The California Southern National Geographic Folded Map is the best Southern California choice. It is waterproof and tear resistant and includes regional roads, destinations, parks and Los Angeles information.

What is the best map for Los Angeles and Las Vegas?

Choose the California & Nevada National Geographic Map for waterproof durability or the California Marco Polo Map for a larger 1:800,000 road scale and LA, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas insets.

What is the best map for a Pacific Coast road trip?

Use Los Angeles Borch for the city, Southern California National Geographic for the initial coast and a complete California map for the longer journey. Check Caltrans conditions daily because coastal closures can change the route substantially.

What is the best map for Route 66?

The Route 66 Map ITMB follows the historic corridor from Chicago to Santa Monica. Add a current USA road map and Los Angeles Borch for the final metropolitan approach.

What is the best Los Angeles wall map?

The Los Angeles Wall Map is the strongest modern choice. It combines a broad regional view with a detailed Downtown inset on a 1000 × 673 mm sheet.

Can the Los Angeles wall map be written on?

Choose the laminated finish for a writeable, wipe-clean surface and use a suitable whiteboard marker. Paper is better for framing and canvas for decorative display.

What is the best historical map of Los Angeles?

The California 1954 National Geographic Map is the best historical option in this guide because it includes a detailed Los Angeles inset within a landmark mid-century statewide map.

Are historical California maps suitable for driving?

No. Use them for research, comparison, collecting and display. Roads, municipalities, place names and access conditions may have changed substantially.

Where can I buy Los Angeles maps in Australia?

Mapworld stocks Los Angeles, California and United States travel and wall maps online through its North America collection, with Australia-wide delivery.
