World Equal Earth Wall Map Physical — Africa-Centred — 2026 Edition

Topography & Environments | Equal-Area Projection | Three Sizes | Five Premium Finishes

Discover the world beyond political borders.

The World Equal Earth Physical Wall Map — Africa-Centred invites you to explore the planet through its landscapes rather than its divisions. Mountains, rivers, vegetation and the ocean floor take centre stage, revealing a world whose natural features continue across national boundaries. Created by cartographer Tom Patterson, this physical edition deliberately omits country boundary lines so the geography can speak for itself.

With Africa prominently positioned near the centre, the map offers an expansive view of the Earth’s environments. Its softly coloured land, blue oceans and detailed relief create a display that rewards both a passing glance and a closer look.

Available in three sizes, including an impressive two-metre-wide Mega edition, it makes a compelling centrepiece for a classroom, library, office or home—a world map for people who want to understand the landscape, not simply locate a country.

🌍 A Physical World Map with a Different Focus

A political map helps answer “Which country is that?” This map encourages a different set of questions: “What is the landscape like? Where do the rivers flow? What lies beneath the ocean?”

The Equal Earth Physical Map brings together terrain, rivers and lakes, vegetation, land cover and seabed geography. It was developed as a companion to the Equal Earth Political Map, offering a complementary view of the same planet.

Display it on its own for an uninterrupted portrait of the natural world, or pair it with a political edition to create a useful contrast between physical geography and human boundaries.

🗺️ Features & Highlights

Shaded relief that reveals the landscape
Terrain shading gives mountain ranges, plateaus and lowlands visual definition, making the shape of the land easier to explore.

Environmental colouring—not country colouring
The colours describe vegetation and land cover rather than separating neighbouring countries. Forests, grasslands, deserts and icy environments contribute to the map’s natural appearance.

An ocean floor worth exploring
The oceans are more than a blue background. Underwater relief adds another layer of interest, inviting attention to the submerged landscape between the continents.

Rivers, lakes and geographic connections
Water features provide a framework for following the relationships between uplands, inland landscapes and coasts. Together, these elements reflect the map’s focus on the natural world.

More than 3,000 geographic labels
The source map includes 3,000-plus labels, balancing useful reference detail with an uncluttered overall presentation.

Africa-centred, north-up presentation
This version uses the Greenwich meridian, 0°, as its centre line, with Africa and Europe prominently positioned in the composition.

🌐 Equal Earth: Correct Relative Areas, Recognisable Shapes

The Equal Earth projection preserves the relative surface areas of the continents and oceans while maintaining an attractive, recognisable world shape. Its curved sides suggest the globe, while straight lines of latitude make north–south comparisons straightforward. The projection was developed by Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny.

This is particularly useful for a physical world map: the viewer can compare the extent of different parts of the planet without the strong polar-area enlargement associated with Mercator. Like every flat world map, however, Equal Earth involves compromises—it preserves area, not every shape, distance or direction.

The result is a thoughtful balance between geographical comparison and visual appeal.

🏛️ International Recognition for Equal-Area Mapping

In September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Correct the Map” resolution, promoting representations that better preserve the relative sizes of continents. The resolution specifically highlighted Equal Earth as an example of this approach. (United Nations)

This recognition reinforces the educational relevance of equal-area mapping. It concerns cartographic representation—not United Nations certification of this individual wall map or endorsement of a particular publisher’s products. (UN Transcripts)

🎓 An Engaging Resource for Geography Education

This map offers a starting point for lessons that connect places with the environments around them.

Use it to introduce physical geography, compare land-cover patterns, explore the relationship between rivers and terrain, or discuss what an equal-area projection preserves. It also encourages students to look beyond familiar country outlines and recognise the natural features that connect different regions.

For a classroom discussion, begin with a simple question:

What do you notice about the world when the national borders disappear?

That change of emphasis can turn a familiar classroom object into something students want to investigate.

📐 Three Size Options

Choose the size that suits your wall and how closely the map will be studied.

Size Dimensions Display suggestion Paper version
Standard 1000 mm (W) × 551 mm (H) A versatile choice for studies, bedrooms, home offices and smaller display spaces. 160 gsm paper
Large 1400 mm (W) × 770 mm (H) A substantial display for classrooms, libraries, meeting rooms and home feature walls. 160 gsm paper
Mega 2000 mm (W) × 1103 mm (H) A two-metre-wide centrepiece for larger classrooms, offices, reception areas and expansive interiors. 120 gsm paper

The larger sizes give the same geographic content more space, making individual labels easier to examine.

Paper-stock note: The 2000 × 1103 mm Mega paper version uses 120 gsm paper. The Standard and Large paper versions use 160 gsm paper. Canvas versions use the separate canvas material described below.

🏠 A Natural Choice for Homes, Schools & Workspaces

For homes and studies, the physical presentation offers a quieter alternative to a brightly coloured political map. It can evoke places you have explored while keeping unfamiliar landscapes within view.

For schools and libraries, it provides a visual starting point for geography, environmental studies and conversations about map design.

For offices and meeting spaces, it makes an engaging reference for organisations interested in the natural world, travel, conservation or education.

For map lovers, it offers something different from another country-and-capital map: a chance to spend time with the planet’s underlying geography.

The Canvas with Timber Hang Rails finish is especially appealing for a relaxed, frameless display, while Paper suits a carefully chosen frame and Laminated suits more frequent handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Equal Earth projection?

Equal Earth is an equal-area world map projection that preserves the correct relative area of continents and other geographic regions while maintaining a recognisable overall world shape. Like every flat world map, it introduces some distortion of shapes, distances and directions.

What does the physical edition show?

The World Equal Earth Wall Map Physical - Africa-Centred focuses on the natural world, including terrain, rivers and lakes, vegetation, land cover and the ocean floor. It helps viewers explore the Earth's landscapes and the physical features connecting different regions.

How does a physical world map differ from a political world map?

A physical world map emphasises natural features such as mountains, plains, deserts, rivers and ocean basins. A political world map emphasises countries, international boundaries and capitals. The physical edition is particularly useful for exploring landforms and natural environments.

Why is this version Africa-centred?

This edition places Africa prominently in the centre of the world map, with Europe above it and the Atlantic and Indian oceans on either side. The layout provides a useful perspective for exploring Africa's landscapes and its geographic relationships with surrounding continents and oceans.

Is this map suitable for schools and classrooms?

Yes. The map supports lessons on physical geography, continents, oceans, landforms, rivers, vegetation and map projections. Displaying it alongside a political world map helps students compare natural landscapes with the way people divide the world into countries.
