Darlington contains the remains of convict settlements that operated from 1825 to 1833 and again from 1842 to 1850. During the 1880s, Italian entrepreneur Diego Bernacchi recognised the island’s commercial potential, establishing agricultural and winemaking ventures and developing local limestone resources for cement production.

Following the closure of the cement works in 1930, Maria Island continued as a small farming and fishing community before being declared a national park in 1971. Today, its combination of layered history and outstanding scenery attracts visitors for heritage experiences, bushwalking, camping, wildlife observation and coastal recreation.
