What Is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a navigation sport in which participants use a detailed map—usually with a compass—to visit a series of control points.
The competitor decides how to travel between those controls. A straight line on the map does not mean a compulsory straight-line route on the ground. One leg may offer several options:

climb directly over a ridge;

contour around the slope;
-
follow a track for extra distance but simpler navigation;
-
use a creek, fence or vegetation boundary as a handrail; or
-
approach the control from a precise attack point.
Each route has a cost in distance, climb, surface, vegetation, complexity and risk of error.
This is why orienteering exercises the mind as thoroughly as the body. The fastest runner does not automatically win. The successful competitor is the person who balances movement speed with navigational accuracy.

Foot, Sprint, Street and Mountain-Bike Orienteering
The word orienteering covers several related formats.
Bush or forest orienteering uses highly detailed terrain maps. Contours, rock, watercourses, vegetation and tracks influence both location and route choice.
Sprint orienteering takes place in compact, often urban or campus environments. Decisions happen rapidly, and mapped barriers or out-of-bounds areas must be respected even when they appear physically crossable.
Park and street events make the sport accessible in suburban environments. They are often excellent for beginners because paths, fences, buildings and streets provide strong location cues.
Mountain-bike orienteering emphasises the ridability and connectivity of tracks. It rewards route planning at speed and requires equipment suited to handling a map while riding.
Rogaining is a related navigation sport rather than simply another name for orienteering. Competitors normally choose which controls to visit within a time limit, often across a much larger area and over several hours. A rugged baseplate compass is generally more useful than a pure racing thumb compass for extended rogaining.
You Do Not Have to Run
Beginners frequently assume they will be in the way if they walk. They will not.
Australian clubs normally offer several courses of different physical length and navigational difficulty. Walking an easy course, taking time to orient the map and stopping at decision points is a sensible way to begin. Running becomes useful only when your navigation can keep pace.

Why Southern Hemisphere Compass Balancing Matters
The Earth’s magnetic field does not pull a compass needle only sideways toward north. It also pulls downward at an angle that varies by location.
A compass balanced for the Northern Hemisphere may tilt and drag when used in Australia. That can make the needle slower, less stable or more likely to catch against the capsule.

The Important Declination Exception in Orienteering
This is one of the most useful distinctions in the entire article.
On a conventional Australian topographic map, you must understand the relationship between true north, grid north and magnetic north. The map margin normally provides a north diagram, and the value changes with place and time. Geoscience Australia defines magnetic declination as the angle between true north and magnetic north and provides an official Australian magnetic-declination calculator.
A purpose-made orienteering map is different.
Its north lines are normally aligned to magnetic north. That means the orienteer ordinarily aligns the compass needle directly with the printed magnetic-north lines. No separate true-to-magnetic conversion is required during the event.
Do not carry that shortcut across to a topographic map.
Before navigating with any sheet:

identify what its north lines represent;
-
read the marginal information;
-
check the map’s date;
-
apply the correct current declination process where required; and
-
practise the method before depending on it in unfamiliar terrain.

How to Read an Australian Orienteering Map
An orienteering map is not a colourful version of an ordinary bushwalking map. It is a specialised representation of movement through terrain.
The official Orienteering Australia Getting Started guide explains the principal colour system:

brown describes landform, including contours;
-
blue shows water and drainage features;
-
black shows many human-made and rock features;
-
white commonly represents runnable forest;
-
green indicates vegetation that increasingly restricts movement as it darkens;
-
yellow indicates open land; and
-
purple or magenta usually carries the overprinted course information.
This is why beginners often misread white. On many general maps, white suggests an absence of information. On an orienteering map, it can represent useful, passable forest.
The Course Overprint
A conventional line course generally shows:
-
a triangle for the start;
-
circles centred precisely on control locations;
-
sequential control numbers;
-
connecting lines that clarify order, not compulsory routes; and
-
a double circle for the finish.
The actual control is not merely “somewhere inside the circle”. It should be at the mapped feature in the centre, with a control description specifying the exact feature and placement.
Scale
Orienteering maps cover small areas at large scales so they can show fine detail.
Common bush-event scales include 1:10,000 and 1:15,000. Sprint maps are commonly around 1:4,000, although the event map and organiser’s information are always authoritative.
At 1:10,000:

A competitor who forgets to check scale may badly misjudge distance, particularly when moving from a forest event to a sprint.
Contours
Contours describe the shape of the land. They allow the orienteer to identify:

spurs;
-
gullies;
-
saddles;
-
knolls;
-
depressions;
-
ridges; and
-
changes in steepness.
Australian orienteering maps often use relatively small contour intervals, commonly around five metres in bush terrain and sometimes less in sprint mapping. Read the interval printed on the actual map.

Purpose-Made Orienteering Maps vs Topographic Maps
A standard topographic map is useful for broad navigation training, route planning, bushwalking and learning contours, grids and declination. It is not a substitute for a current purpose-made competition map.
Orienteering mapping usually shows finer terrain and vegetation detail, maps passability specifically, uses magnetic-north lines and applies sport-specific symbols.

The Core Orienteering Skills
Equipment helps, but technique determines whether the equipment is useful.
1. Orient the Map
Rotate the map so its magnetic-north lines align with the red end of the compass needle.
When the map is oriented, features on the map relate naturally to the landscape. A track leaving to the right on paper should leave to the right on the ground.
Reorient frequently. Do not wait until the world has stopped making sense.
2. Fold the Map
Fold the map so the current leg and nearby alternatives are visible without holding the whole sheet open.
A good fold reduces distraction. A bad fold hides the next decision point or forces constant refolding.
3. Thumb Your Position
Place your thumb close to your current position and move it forward as you progress.
This simple habit reduces the time needed to relocate your eyes after looking at the terrain. A thumb compass develops this into an equipment system, but the technique begins with any map.
4. Maintain Map Contact
Map contact means knowing approximately where you are and which feature should appear next.
You do not need to identify everything. Select useful features:

track junction;
-
creek crossing;
-
vegetation edge;
-
saddle;
-
boulder cluster;
-
fence corner; or
-
change in slope.
If expected features stop appearing, respond early.
5. Use Handrails
A handrail is a linear feature that guides movement, such as a track, fence, creek, ridge or vegetation boundary.
Beginners should favour strong handrails. Advanced competitors may choose less obvious ones when the faster route justifies the extra complexity.
6. Choose an Attack Point
An attack point is a clear feature near the control from which you make the final precise approach.
The best attack point is easy to recognise and close enough to reduce uncertainty. Running quickly to a strong attack point, then slowing for the final approach, is often faster than navigating vaguely from the beginning of the leg.
7. Use Collecting and Catching Features
Collecting features confirm progress before the control.
A catching feature lies beyond the target and tells you that you have gone too far—a road, large creek, ridge or major vegetation boundary, for example.
Routes with strong catching features are more forgiving.
8. Estimate Distance
Distance can be estimated through:
A compass scale helps on the map. Pacing helps on the ground. Neither should be used without checking terrain.
9. Read the Contours
Contours allow navigation when tracks and vegetation boundaries are absent.
Rather than thinking only in isolated shapes, ask:

am I climbing or descending?
-
is the slope becoming steeper?
-
am I crossing a spur or entering a gully?
-
should the ground fall left or right?
-
where is the high point relative to me?
10. Relocate Methodically
When uncertain:
-
stop;
-
orient the map;
-
return mentally to the last definite location;
-
identify large surrounding features;
-
consider distance and direction travelled;
-
move to a strong feature if necessary; and
-
do not compound the error by running hopefully.
The most valuable navigation speed is often the speed at which you recognise uncertainty.
