This is a beautiful high-quality print of a hand-coloured original map from “Voyage Pittoresque Autour du monde”, by Dumont D’Urville, published in Paris, 1834.

D'Urville conducted hydrographic researches in the Aegean and the Black Sea between 1819-20, he went around the world as second in command of the "Coquille" 1822-25.

From 1826-29 D'Urville travelled to Polynesia as captain of the "Astrolabe" to search for La Pérouse, gathering valuable scientific data and finding the relics of La Pérouse's expedition at Vanikoro.

In 1830 D'Urville escorted King Charles X and his family, deposed by the July Revolution, to England.

The new king, Louis Philippe, placed D'Urville in charge of an Antarctic expedition in 1837-40, which discovered the Louis Philippe, Joinville and Adélie Lands. He was promoted to Admiral and unfortunately was accidentally killed in 1842.
